The Gymnast Who Learned to Walk

“You will never walk and you will always breathe through a respirator”. That’s what the doctors told Marcus Lilliebjörn after his severe accident. But Marcus begged to differ – he was determined he would learn to walk again!

At the age of 19, Marcus Lilliebjörn was a very promising gymnast. His specialty was the triple somersault with a twist. But one fateful day a practice jump went terribly wrong and he broke his neck.

The fracture was serious and it left Marcus completely paralyzed, hooked up to a respirator. The doctors told him that his future prognosis didn’t look good.

But suddenly a miracle happens and Marcus is able to move his legs and arms a tiny bit. Very slowly, and with almost unbelievable effort and persistence, he begins to rebuild his atrophied muscles. And despite many setbacks, Marcus keeps on fighting for a more independent future.

For three and a half years, director Tom Alandh followed Marcus Lilliebjörn’s tough journey back. The resulting film is a heartwarming tribute to life and a portrait of a young person with exceptional stamina.
