This is a film about two artists, Sigrid Hjertén and Isaac Grünewald, and about their love, artistic life and struggle to survive in the time before, during and after the Second World War. Director and scriptwriter Anders Wahlgren has had access to a unique collection of letters, photos, film footage, police records and newspaper articles. This information has been turned into a chamber piece, a dialogue for two actors in accompaniment to both authentic and new footage.
The film starts in Stockholm. The year is 1909, and Sigrid and Isaac meet each other at a party.Isaac persuades Sigrid to go to Paris with him to see the new art flourishing there at Henri Matisse's painting school, where Isaac already is a student. From here, we follow them through a long and difficult marriage where both of them are put to the test and must face a great deal of adversity. Sigrid struggles to continue her artistic life in an age where she is expected to sacrifice herself for husband and children.
