A close and intimate portrait of one of Sweden’s most beloved artists. It is also a film about a person with an uncompromising and neverending creativity.
Lalehs life was dramatic from the start. She was born in Iran in 1982, but due to her fathers political activity the family had to flee to Belarus. In 1991 they moved to Gothenburg, Sweden.
In 2005 Laleh Pourkarim released her first album in Sweden, and it became an instant hit. The same year she was nominated for seven Grammis Awards and she won three of them, among others for Best Female Artist.
Since then Laleh has gone from strength to strength. She is massively popular in the Nordic countries, and was invited to perform in Oslo at the memorial concert for the victims of the Utøya massacre.
Laleh is one of few artists who is both songwriter, performer and also her own producer.
- I like the producing most really. That’s when I can build up a whole new world and do exactly as I like, says Laleh.
In the film she talks candidly about life and death, her music and career, and about being a woman in a male-dominated profession.
Laleh’s experiences as a refugee has formed much of the person she is today. She feels a strong sense of gratitude towards her parents, who sacrificed so much to give her a better future.
- I have an obligation to take care of myself, so I pay respect to the freedom that´s been given to me through my parents efforts, says Laleh.
