ECMO – The Final Chance

ECMO is a technique which provides blood oxygenation support to severely injured and exhausted patients by an artificial lung outside the body. The film follows patients and staff at the ECMO clinic at Karolinska University Hospital in Stockholm, a place of constant struggle for life but also of true miracles.

This is a unique depiction of daily life at an intensive care clinic helping extremely sick patients with a fatality risk of at least 80 %. The artificial lung allows the patient’s body a last chance to heal and recover.

The film is also an exciting story about how a few enthusiasts managed to start an ECMO clinic in Sweden back in the 1980’s, despite extremely limited resources and great scepticism from colleagues. Today the team is still working and the life saving rate now exceeds 70% - the best results in the world.

One of the patients we meet in the film is newborn Sophie who lies dying in a hospital in Ireland. But suddenly, in the middle of the night, the ECMO team from Sweden appear. They fly Sophie back to the Swedish clinic, in a last attempt to save her life...
